Question

A mixture of non reacting gases exert a pressure of 5 atm. If one of the gases occupy 40% volume of the mixture, what would be its partial pressure in atm?

Open in App
Solution

Volume percent can be approximated to mole percent as volume is directly proportional to the number of moles.
Volume percent of the gas =40 %
Mole percent of the gas =40 %
Mole fraction of the gas =40100=0.4
The partial pressure of a gas is the product of its mole fraction and total pressure. It is
=0.4×5atm=2atm.
Hence, the partial pressure of the gas is 2 atm.
