Question

A mixture of petrol and kerosene can be separated by ______________

Open in App
Solution

  • A method of separating mixtures based on differences in their volatilities in a boiling liquid mixture is called Simple Distillation
  • Petrol and kerosene are two miscible liquids having a boiling point difference greater than 25°C, so we can use a simple distillation method

Steps include:-

  • Heat the mixture of petrol and kerosene in a distillation flask, the liquid having a lower boiling point (petrol) will start to vaporize and pass through the condenser (condenses) and be collected first and kerosene will remain in the distillation flask
  • In this way, we can separate the miscible liquids

Hence, a mixture of petrol and kerosene can be separated by simple distillation
