A model of a rectangular park is having a grass field of 18 cm long and 15 cm wide such that there is a path of 1.5 cm wide along each of its sides extending outside on each side of the park. The area of the path is 108 cm2.
Area of the path = Area of the outer rectangle - Area of the inner rectangle
The path so formed is effectively adding 1.5 cm + 1.5 cm = 3 cm to the length and breadth of the park, as shown in the figure.
So, area of the path = 21 × 18 - 18 × 15
= 18 × (21 - 15) = 18 × 6 = 108 cm2
