A modem performs ___________.
A modem performs
Modem stands for modulator/demodulator.
A modem converts digital signals generated by the computer into analog signals which can be transmitted over a telephone or cable line and transforms incoming analog signals into their digital equivalents.
Example:- telephone or cable lines.
1) Modulation:-
A modulator is a device that performs modulation. A demodulator is a device that performs demodulation, the inverse of modulation. A modem (from modulator–demodulator) can perform both operations.
Modulation is the process of superimposing the information contents of a modulating signal on a carrier signal (which is of high frequency) by varying the characteristic of carrier signal according to the modulating signal.
2) Demodulation:-
Demodulation is the process of separating or recovering the signal from the modulated carrier wave.
3) Data compression:-
The sending modem will compress the data on-the-fly and the receiving modem will decompress the data to its original form.
