Jumping 3 feet and slipping 2 feet implies that each hour the monkey climbs 1 foot and so that way for 7 feet he will climb for 7 hrs. then in 8th hour, he will jump 3 feet and since he'll b at the top, so he 'll jump out of that well without slipping another 2 feet. That makes it 8 hrs in total.
