Question

(a) Monochromatic light of wavelength 589 nm is incident from air on a water surface. If p for water is 1.33, find the wavelength, frequency and speed of the refracted light.
(b) A double convex lens is made of a glass of refractive index 1.55, with both faces of the same radius of curvature. Find the radius of curvature required, if the focal length is 20 cm.

Solution

Given : μ=1.33
λa=589 nm
As μ=cv
v = cμ=3×1081.33
Speed, v = 2.26×108 m/s
As the frequency remains same,
v = cλa=3×108589×109
Frequency v = 5.09×1014Hz
Wavelength, λw=vν
= 2.26×1085.09×1014
= 444 nm
(b) Given : μ=1.55,f=20cm
We know that ,
1f=(μ1)(1R11R2)120=(1.551)(1R+1R)120=0.55×2RR=20×0.55×2R=22 cm
