Question 4
A motorboat starting from rest on a lake accelerates in a straight line at a constant rate of 3.0 ms2 for 8.0 s. How far does the boat travel during this time?

Solution

Given, initial velocity of the motorboat, u=0, acceleration, a=3.0 ms2 and time, t=8.0 s
Let s be the distance covered.
From second equation of motion, distance, s=ut+12at2
Therefore, distance covered by the motor boat =0×8+12×3.0×82 =12×3×8×8 =96 m
