Question

A moving coil galvanometer has a coil of resistance 59Ω. It shows a full scale deflection for a current of 50mA. How will you convert it to an ammeter having a range of 0 to 3A?

Solution

A moving coil galvanometer is converted by connecting a shunt resistance Rs in parallel to galvanometer resistance RG.
Given : I=3 A, RG=59Ω and IG=0.05 A
Since potential difference A and B is equal to that between C and D.
IGRG=(IIG)Rs
Or (0.05)(59)=(30.05)Rs
Rs=1Ω
