Question

A muonic atom contains a nucleus of charge Ze and a negative muon, μ, moving about it. The μ is an elementary charge with -e and a mass that is approximately 200 times as large as an electron mass.

What is the wavelength of the first line(in A) in the Lyman series for such an atom?

Solution

For regular electron atom wavelength of first line in Lyman series ,
1λ=RH(114)
λ=1216 A

Since RH=mk2e42h4

Hence for muonic atom, RH=μk2e42h4
λ=1216200=6.5 A
