Question

(a) Name an instrument used for measuring electric potential difference?
And with the help of the diagram show how this instrument is connected in an electric circuit?
(b) Why does this instrument practically not consume any electric energy from the electric circuit?

Solution

(a) Voltmeter is the device used for measuring potential differences. Voltmeter is always connected in parallel to the resistance.
(b) Generally the resistance of Voltmeter is higher than the resistances which we will use.As they are in parallel the voltage across them is equal.
IV=VRV
As RV is large the value of VRV is taken to be zero. So the value of current is zero and the electric energy used by this is zero.
