(a) The tropical variety in South India is Saccharum officinarum. This variety of sugarcane has higher sugar content and thick stems but it does not grow well in North India. Saccharum barberi is grown in North India but it has poor sugar content and yield. Both the species were crossed to get a hybrid variety which had high sugar content, high yield, thick stems and ability to grow in sugarcane belt of North India. This variety of sugarcane has higher sugar content and thick stems.
