A narrow uniform glass tube 80 cm long and open at both ends is half immersed in mercury. Then, the top of the tube is closed and it is taken out of mercury. A column of mercury 22 cm long then remains in the tube. What is the atmospheric pressure?

The correct option is B 60 cm of Hg
Given:- Length of the class tube =80cm

Solution:-

let the cross section area of the tube A cm2

When half tube is immersed in mercury .

Volume of air

V1=A×40cm2

Pressure of enclosed air

P1=P

When tube taken out of mercury

P2=(p20)cm

V2=A×60cm2

As temperature is constant

P2V2=P1V2

(P20)(A×60)=(P)(a×40)

=60 cm of Hg column.

Hence the correct option is A
