Earthworm is a tube-shaped, segmented worm belongs to the phylum Annelida. In earthworm, most of the cells are not in direct contact with the surrounding environment. So they need special excretory organs to remove waste materials from the body. The excretory organs of the earthworm are called nephridia. It is a tubular coiled structure, specially meant for removal of nitrogenous waste out of the body. The organs are suspended within a fluid-filled body cavity called a coelom, and hence segmented worms are referred as coelomates. Segmented worms have two nephridia in almost every segment. These nephridia collect waste and transport it directly through the coelom and finally out of the body through the anus.
