The functional group present in this organic compound is the alcohol (hydroxyl) group (-OH). When a neutral organic compound of alcohol group such as ethanol (C₂H₅OH) is warmed with some ethanoic acid, in the presence of a small quantity of concentrated sulphuric acid, a sweet-smelling ester is produced.
