Question

A neutron moving witha speed v strikes a hydrogen atom in ground state towards it with the same speed. Find the minimum speed of the neutron for which inelastic (completly or partially) collision may take place. The mass of neutron = mass of hydrogen = 1.67×1027kg

Open in App
Solution

Energy of the neutron is 12 mv2

The condition for inelastic collision is

12 mv2> 2ΔE

ΔE<14 mv2

Here ΔE is the energy absorted.

Energy required for first excited state is 10.2 e V.

ΔE<10.2eV

10.2eV<14 mV2

vm/n=4×10.2meV

v=10.2×1.6×1019×41.67×1027

= 6×1027 m/sec
