Question

A new flurocarbon of molar mass 102 g/mol was placed in a electrically heated vessel. When the pressure was 650 torr, the liquid boiled at 57oC. After the boiling point had been reached it was found that a current of 0.25 A from a 12 V supply passed for 600 s vapourises 1.8 g of the sample.
(Take R=253 J/molK)

A

Solution

The correct option is D ΔU=99.75 kJ/mol
Molar mass =102 g/mol
Pressure =650 torr
Temperature =57oC=330 K
Q=i× t=0.25× 600=150 C
ΔH=Q× V=150× 12=1800 J
This heat is supplied to the system at constant pressure that is why this is used for change in enthalpy.

For vaporisation of 1.8 g, amount of heat required q=1800 J
For vaporisation of 102 g, amount of heat required q=18001.8×102=102×103 J=102 kJ/mole
Also,
ΔH=ΔU+ΔngRT
102=ΔU+(1×253×103×330)
ΔU=1022.75=99.25 kJ/mole
