When the nucleus of a uranium atom is bombarded with a fast moving neutron, it absorbs the neutron and then breaks into fragments of lower nuclei like barium. The amount of mass decreased during the fission is converted into energy. Three more neutrons are released in the process which further hit other uranium nuclei and the process continues in a chain reaction, until all the fuel is exhausted.
