Question

A nucleus A, with a finite de Broglie wavelength λA, undergoes spontaneous fission into two nuclei B and C of equal masses. B flies in the same direction as that of A, while C flies in the opposite direction with a velocity equal to half of that of B. The de Broglie wavelengths λB and λC of B and C are, respectively,

Solution

The correct option is B λA2, λA
Let P be the momentum of nucleus A. Therefore,

PA=P and PC=PB/2

Since only internal forces are involved, so we can apply conservation of linear momentum,

PA=PB+PC

P=PBPB/2=PB/2

PA=P ; PB=2P ; PC=P

As, λ=hPλA=hPA=hP

λB=λA2 and λC=λA

Hence, (D) is the correct answer.
