A number is increased by 10% and then decreased by 10%. What is the effective increase or decrease in the original number?
Decreases by 1%
Let the number be 'x'.
10% of x=x10
Given, the number x is increased by 10%.
Obtained number =x+x10=11x10
Now, 10% of 11x10=11x100
Now, the number 11x10 decreased by 10%
i.e. Final number
=11x10−11x100
= 110x−11x100
=99x100
=99% of x
∴ Effective change
x−99x100
= x100
=1100x
=1% of x
Thus, we get that the number is effectively decreased by 1%.
