$(96+4x)(x-4)=96x$
$96x-96\times 4+4x^2-16x=96x$
$4x^2-16x-96\times 4=0$
$x^2-4x-96=0$
$x^2-12x+8x-96=0$
$(x-12)(x+8)=0$
$x=-8,12$
$12$ friends were to attend the party and $4$ didn't go.

Thus, total $8$ friends went in the party.
