Method 1
Let the number be 100
Percent increase =10%
=10100×100=10
Increased number =100+10=110
When increased number is 110, orginal number =100
When increased number is 88, orginal number =100110×88=80

Method 2

Let, the number be x
10% of x=x×10%
=x×10100=x10
New number =x+x10
According to the question,
=x+x10=88
10x+x10=88
11x10=88
11x=88×10
x=88011=80
Original number =80
