A number $x$ is $4$ less than three times another number $y$. If their sum is increased by $5$, the result is $25$. Find both the numbers

Let $x$ and $y$ be the first number and the second number.

According to the given condition

$x=3y-4$ $\to \left(1\right)$

$x+y+5=25$ $\to \left(2\right)$

Substituting the value of $x$ from equation $\left(1\right)$ in the equation $\left(2\right)$, we get
$3y-4+y+5=25$
$\Rightarrow 4y+1=25$
$\Rightarrow 4y=25-1$
$\Rightarrow 4y=24$
$\Rightarrow y=\frac{24}{4}=6$

$\Rightarrow x=3y-4=3\times 6-4$

$\Rightarrow x=18-4=14$
Hence, the first number$=14$
