Question

A parallel plate capacitor contains a mica sheet (thickness =103 m) and a sheet of fibre (thickness =0.5×103 m). The dielectric constant of mica is 8 and that of fibre is 2.5. Assuming that the fibre breaks down when subjected to an electric field of 6.4×106 V/m, find the maximum safe voltage that can be applied to the capacitor.

Solution

The correct option is A 2.08 kV
Given,
dm=103 m;df=0.5×103 mkm=8;kf=2.5E0=6.4×106 Vm1

Vnet=V1+V2Vnet=E1×dm+E2×df=E0Km×dm+E0Kf×df
Vnet=6.4×1068×103+6.4×10625×0.5×103

On solving you get
Vnet=2.08×103 V
Vnet=2.08 kV
