Question

A parallel plate capacitor is filled by a dielectric whose permittivity varies with applied voltage according to relation εr=αV, where α=1(volt)^-1. The same capacitor containing no dielectric, charged to a voltage of 72 volt is connected in parallel to the first non-linear uncharged capacitor. The final voltage across the capacitor is?

Solution

Let the final potential difference be V volt, then the capacity of other capacitor will be given by,C×αVV=C×72+αCV×0C+CαVCV [1+αV]=72 COr V2+V-72=0Or V2+9V-8V-72=0Or V(V+9)-8(V+9)=0Or V=8 V and V=-9VLeaving negative root,we get V=8 Volt
