Question

A parallel plate capacitor is filled by a dielectric whose relative permittivity varies with the applied voltage (V) as ε=α V where α=2 V1. A similar capacitor with no dielectric charged to V0= 78 V. Solution

The correct option is D 6 V
When capacitors are connected in parallel the voltage across both the capacitors will be same. Let the final voltage be V
For capacitor with no dielectric let the capacitance be C hence charge on the capacitor will be Q1=CV
Initial charge on the capacitor is Q0=CV0
For similar capacitor with dielectric capacitance C1=εC=(αV)C hence charge on the capacitor will be Q2=C1V
From the conservation of charges
Initial charge=Final charge

Q0=Q1+Q2

CV0=CV+C1V=CV+(αVC)V

V0=V+αV2

78=V+2V2

solving we get

V=1±124×2×482=6 Volt

Final voltage on the capacitor V=6 V
