Solution

Let the total expenditure be E and the number of students in the hostel be n.Also, let some part of the expenditure be x.According to the question, x α nx=k1n ...k1 is constant. ...(1) & E-x =k2 ...k2 is constant.From (1), we get: E-k1n=k2E=k2+k1nNow,4500=k2+k1×40 E= Rs 4500 when n= 40k2=4500-40k1 ...(2)Also, 5300=k2+k1×48 E= Rs 5300 when n= 48k2=5300-48k1 ...(3) From (2) & (3), we get:4500-40k1=5300-48k1 8k1=800k1=100 ...(4) Putting eq (4) in eq (2), we get: k2=4500-40×100k2=500 Equation of variation: E=500+100nE= 500+5500 n=55E= Rs 6000
