Question

A particle is thrown over a triangle from one end of a horizontal base and after grazing the vertex falls on the other end of the base. If αandβ be the base angles and θ the angle of projection, prove that tanθ=tanα+tanβ.

Open in App
Solution

tanα+tanβ=yx+yRx

tanα+tanβ=yRx(Rx) ...(i)

Equation of trajectory is

y=xtanθ[1xR]

or, tanθ=yRx(Rx) ...(ii)

From Eqs. (i) and (ii), we have

tanθ=tanα+tanβ
