Question

Question: A particle moving in a straight line covers half the distance with speed of 2m/s. The other half of the distance is covered in two equal time intervals with speed of 4.5 m/s and 3.5/ms respectively. The average speed of the particle during this motion is what

Solution

let 2x be the total distance

t - time taken to cover first half of the distance

t1 - time taken to cover the other half

x = 4.5t1 + 3.5t1 = 8t1

t1 = x/8

total time = t + 2t1 = x/2 + x/4 = 3x/4

avg speed = 2x/ (3x/4) = 8/3 m/s
