For minimum Kinetic energy both should have same velocities.
12mv2=3J
By momentum conservation,
mv=3mu
u=v3
Kinetic energy min=12(3m)(v3)2)
=13(12mv2)=33=1J
So maximum potential energy stored=31=2J
