Question

A particle slides on. the surface of a fixed smooth spherce starting from the topmost point. Find the angle rotated, by the radius through the particle, when it leaves contact with the sphere.

Solution

Let the velocity be v when the body leaves the surface,

From the free body diagram,

mv2R=mg cos θ

[because normal reaction]

v2=Rg cos θ ...(i)

Again from work energy principle

Change in K.E.=work done

12mv20=mg(RR cos θ

v2=2gR(1cos θ ...(ii)

From (i) and (ii),

Rg cos θ=2gR(1cos θ)

3gR cos θ=2gR

cos θ=23

θ=cos1(23)
