Question

A passenger train takes one hour less for a journey of 150km if its speed is increased by 5km/hr from its usual speed. Find the usual speed of the train.

Open in App
Solution

Let the usual speed of train be x km/hr

Then, increased speed of the train = (x + 5)km/hr

Time taken by the train under usual speed speed to cover 150 km = 150 over xhr

Time taken by the train under increased speed to cover 150km =fraction numerator 150 over denominator x plus 5 end fractionhr

So, it is given that

150 over x fraction numerator 150 over denominator left parenthesis x plus 5 right parenthesis end fraction equals 1
fraction numerator 150 left parenthesis x plus 5 right parenthesis 150 x over denominator x left parenthesis x plus 5 right parenthesis end fraction equals 1
fraction numerator 150 x plus 750  150 x over denominator x squared plus 5 x end fraction equals 1

750=x2+5x

x2+5x750=0

x2+30x25x750=0

x(x+30)25(x+30)

(x25)(x+30)

x = 25 or x = - 30

Since, the speed of the train can never be negative

Therefore, the usual speed of the train is x = 25km/hr
