A path of uniform width $4m$ runs around the outside of a rectangular field $24m$ by $18m$. Find the area of the path.

Let the figure is divided into two rectangles $ABCD$ & $PQRS$

Area of $ABCD=(24+4+4)\times (18+4+4)m^2$

$=(32\times 26)m^2$

[$\because$ Area of rectangle $=l\times b$]

$=832m^2$

Area of $PQRS=(24\times 18)m^2$

$=432m^2$

Area of path=Area of $ABCD$ - Area of $PQRS$

$=(832-432)m^2$

$=400m^2$
