Question

A pea plant which is homozygous for Green pods which are inflated [GGII] is crossed with a homozygous plant for yellow pods which are considered [ggii]. Answer the following question.
State Mendel's law of 'Segregation of Gametes'.

Solution

  • Mendel's first law or Law of Segregation of Gametes states that "the alleles of a given locus segregate into separate gametes".
  • Explanation- The two alleles of a gene pair segregate or separate from each other during meiosis and each gamete has an equal probability of obtaining either allele of the gene.
  • A parent pea plant is homozygous for green and inflated pods [GGII] which is dominant.
  • Another parent pea plant is homozygous for yellow and deflated pods [ggii] which is recessive.
  • Both the homozygous parent plants are crossed.
  • The gametes obtained are GI and gi (alleles have separated).
  • The resultant progeny is heterozygous GgIi (with dominant traits).
