Question

A pea plant with pure Yellow (YY) Round (RR) seeds was crossed with a plant having pure green (yy) wrinkled (rr) seeds. What would be the nature of offspring in the F1- generation?

Solution

Dihybrid cross:

It is a type of medallion cross which is a cross between two individuals of distinct traits and distinct genes.

This is a dihybrid cross. when we see the phenotype of the two types of progeny we find that both the types have the seed color yellow while approximately half of them have round seed type while the other half will have wrinkled seed type.

So, the pea plant with yellow and round seeds must be homozygous for yellow seed color (YY) while it must be heterozygous for the round seed type (Rr).

The genotypic ratio of the dihybrid cross is 9:3:3:1.
So, the genotype of the plant after the F1 generation with yellow and round seed is YYRr.
