Solution

Let C, S, B, T be the events of the person going by car, scooter, bus or train respectively

Given that P(C) = 17, P(S) = 37 ;P(B) = 27 ; P(T) = 17

Let ¯Lbe the event of the person reaching the office in time.

P(¯¯¯¯LC)=79,P(¯¯¯¯LS)=89,P(¯¯¯¯LB)=59,P(¯¯¯¯LT)=89

P(C¯¯¯¯L)=P(¯¯¯LC).P(C)P(¯¯¯¯L/C)P(C)+P(¯¯¯¯L/S)P(S)+P(¯¯¯¯L/B)P(B)+P(¯¯¯¯L/T)P(T)

=17×7917×79+37×89+27×59+89×17=17=1p.

p=7
