For clear vision, the rays entering the eye must get focused on the retina. A person having normal vision is able to see both distant (the bird) and close object (the novel) because his ciliary muscles and ligaments changes the shape of the lens to adjust the focal length accordingly. This ability of the eye to adjust in order to assure a clear vision of the object at different distances is known as accommodation.
