Question

A person lifts a load in the upward direction. He applies force on the load in the upward direction due to which the object is also displaced in the upward direction.

State in which direction is the force of gravity acting on the object?

Solution

  1. Force is defined as the external agent that causes changes in the state of motion of an object. It has both magnitude and direction.
  2. Force due to gravity is the gravitational pull on an object in the downward direction.
  3. Force due to gravity is obtained by, Fg=massofanobject×accelerationoftheobjectduetogravity.

The direction of the force:

  1. According to the question, a person lifts the load in the upward direction.
  2. So, there is two-component of force that acts on the load, one in the upward direction and the other which is a universal force due to gravity which always acts in the downward direction.

Thus, the force of gravity always acts on the object in the downward direction.
