Question

A person moves along a circular thread with speed 10 ms1. He covers one cycle in 10 minutes.
The person is now given a challenge. He is required to complete a distance equal to the circumference in a straight line in 5 minutes. What should be the magnitude of constant acceleration that the person should maintain to complete his challenge? Assume he is starting from rest.

Solution

The correct option is B 215 ms2
Given:
First case:
Speed, v=10 ms1
Time taken for one cycle, t=10 min=10×60 s=600 s
Second case,
Time taken for covering twice the distance is, t=5 min=5×60 s=300 s
Initial speed, u=0

First case:
Let the radius of the circle be R.
Using definition of speed,
v=2πRt
R=vt2π

In the second case, let the acceleration be a.
Distance covered is the same. Hence, distance is:
s=2πR
Using second equation of motion,
s=ut+12at2
2πR=0+12at2
a=4πRt2
a=2vtt2
a=2×10×6003002=215 m/s2
