Question

A person on a pier observes a set of incoming waves that have a sinusoidal form with a distance of 1.6 m between the crests. If the wave lapse against the pier every 4s, what are:

(b) the speed of the waves?

Solution

Step 1- Given data

T=4seconds,

wavelength λ=1.6m.

where T is the time period, f is the frequency and λ is the wavelength.

Step 2- Finding the speed of the wave-

The formula for the speed of the wave is-

v=fλ

v=fλ=0.9×10=9m/s.

Thus, the speed of the wave is 9m/s.
