A person standing on a road has to hold his umbrella at 60 with the vertical to keep away rain. He throws the umbrella and starts running in horizontal direction at a speed of 20 m/s. He finds that the rain drops are hitting his head vertically. Find the speed of rain drops with respect to ground.

While at rest person is holding the umbrella at 60 to avoid rain.
vrg= velocity of rain w.r.t ground, i.e at 60 from vertical.
After man runs horizontally the rain appears vertically downwards to him.
vrm= velocity of rain w.r.t man
vmg=20^i m/s

From relative velocity definition:
vrg=vrm+vmg

From the vector triangle shown in figure:
sinθ=|vmg||vrg|

sin60=20|vrg|
|vrg|=403

|vrg|=403 m/s
|vrg| is the speed of rain w.r.t ground.
