Question

A photon of wavelength 4×107m strike on metal surface,the work function of the metal being 2.13eV. (1eV=1.6020×1019J) calculate the velocity of the photoelectron in n×105ms1.

Solution

(i) E/Photon=hcλ
=6.626×1034×3.0×1084×107
=4.97×1019J=3.10eV
(ii) E=12mu2+w
4.97×1019=12mu2+2.13×1.602×1019
KE=12mu2=4.97×10193.41×1019
=1.56×1019J=0.97eV
(iii) 12mu2=KE
12×9.108×1031×u2=1.56×1019
u=5.85×105ms1
