A piece of cloth costs Rs 35. If the piece was 4 m longer and each metre cost Rs 1 less, the cost would remain unchanged. How long is the piece?

Form a quadratic equation:

Let the length of the piece be xmetres.

Then, the cost of 1metre will be Rs35x.

If the piece was 4metre longer, then,

newlength=x+4metres

According to the question,

x+435x-1=3535-x+140x-4=3535x-x2+140-4xx=3535x-x2+140-4x=35xx2+4x-140=0

Step 2:

Determine the length of the piece:

Use factorization method to find the roots of equation.

x2+4x-140=0x2+14x-10x-140=0xx+14-10x+14=0x+14x-10=0x+14=0orx-10=0x=-14orx=10

But the length cannot be negative, rejecting x=-14

x=10

Hence, the length of the piece is 10metres.
