Question

A piece of wood of relative density 0.25 floats in oil of relative density 0.81. What percentage of volume the wood is above the surface of oil?

Open in App
Solution

Let volume of wood be v and a volume of wood in inside, as density of wood =p1=0.25 [Relative density = density]
density of oil =p2=0.81
From Buoyancy principle,
Buoyant force =aρ2g (weight of liquid displace)
weight of wood =vρ1g
in equilibrium
aρ2g=vρ1g
a=vρ1ρ2=2581v
volume of wood outside water
v=va=v2581v
v=5b81 vv=5681=69.14%
