Question

A piece of zinc foil was dipped into a beaker containing copper sulphte solution.The reactants were left for an hour to allow them to react.
(a) Write a balanced chemical equation to represent this reaction.
(b)What is this reactions called? Define the reaction.
(c)What would you observed if a piece of silver metal was dipped into the copper sulphate solution instead of zinc ? Give reason for your answer.

Solution

(a)
When zinc & oil is dipped in CuSO4 solutoin these redox reaction occurs, since zine is more reaction then copper thus displaces cu from CuSO4 solution
Balanced Chemical reaction
Zn(s)+CuSO4(aq)ZnSO4(aq)+Cu(s)
(b)
The reaction is called as displacement reaction Displacement Reaction = Displacement reaction is a chemical reaction basically in which a more reactive metal ( from reactivity series) displaces a less reactive metals.
Other Examples: Fe(s)+CuSO4(aq)FeSO4(aq)+Cu(s)
(c)
No reaction will takes place when silver metal;s is dipped into copper sulphate solution instead of Zn.
Ag++CuSO4 No reaction
Reason: It is because silver (Aq) has less reactivity than Cu, due to which it cannot displaces (Cu2+) ion from its compounds CuSO4
