Question

A pipe of diameter 1.8m is required to transport an oil of specific gravity 0.90 and viscosity 4×102 poise at a rate of 3m3/sec. Test were conducted on a 18cm diameter pipe using water having viscosity 0.01 poise. The velocity of flow in the model in m/sec. (round off to two decimals) is
  1. 2.64

Solution

The correct option is A 2.64
Given, dp=1.8m,μp=4×102poise,Qp=3m3/sec
Sp=0.90
For model
Sm=1,μm=0.01poise,dm=0.18m
For pipe flow, Reynolds model is applicable
ρmVmdmμm=ρpVpdpμp
1000Vm×0.180.01=900Vp×1.84×102
Vm=2.25Vp
Vp=QpAp=3π4×(1.8)2=1.18m/sec
Vm=2.25×1.18
=2.655m/sec.
2.66m/sec.
