Question

A pipe which can rotate in a vertical plane is mounted on a cart. The cart moves uniformly along a horizontal path with a speed v1=2 m/s. At what angle α to the horizontal should the pipe be placed so that drops of rain falling with a velocity v2=6 m/s move parallel to the walls of the pipe without touching them? consider the velocity of the drops as constant due to the resistance of the air

Solution

The correct option is A tan1(3)
Given, speed of cart VP=v1=2 m/s
And, speed of rain drops VR=v2=6 m/s
Drops of rain move parallel to the walls of pipe if Vrp makes α anlge with the horizontal.

VRP=VRVP
=VR^j(VC)^i
v2^j+v1^i
And, we have
tanα=v2v1=62
α=tan1(3)
