Question

A piston fitted cylinder has a volume of 4 L. This has a mixture of gases along with an aqueous tension, but no liquid water is present. When the piston is moved and the volume becomes 2 L, the total pressure is found to be 15 atm. When the piston is further moved to compress the gas to a volume of 1 L, the total pressure is found to be 29 atm. What will be the total pressure inside the cylinder if the piston expands to a volume of 8 L?

(Assume no volume change due to the condensed liquid if any)

Solution

Let the pressure of the mixture = P and aqueous tension = p when the volume of cylinder is 4 L
When V = 2 L, total pressure = 2P + p = 15.
When V = 1 L, total pressure = 4P + p = 29
Solving, we get P = 7 atm, p = 1 atm.
When the volume = 8 L, total pressure = P/2 + p = 4.5 atm
