Question

A plane simple harmonic progressive wave given by the equation, y=Asin(ωtkx) of wavelength 120 cm is incident normally on a plane surface which is a perfect reflector (acts as fixed end). If a stationary wave is formed, then the ratio of amplitudes of vibrations at points 10 cm and 30 cm from the reflector is

(Here x is measured from reflector)

Solution

The correct option is A 1:2
We know that, standard equation of standing wave is,
y=2Asin(kx)cos(ωt)
At any particular instant i.e., t= fixed, amplitude of particle is given by A0=2Asin(kx)
Wavenumber, k=2πλ=2π120=π60 cm1
So,
A0=2Asin(πx60)cos(ωt)
At, x=10 cm
A1=2Asin(π×1060)cos(ωt)=Acos(ωt)
Similarly, at, x=30 cm
A2=2Asin(π×3060)cos(ωt)=2Acos(ωt)
Therefore,
A1:A2=1:2
