Solution

The correct option is C

2μ1-μ2=1

Step 1: Given data

Refractive index of plano convex lens=μ1

Focal length of convex surface of plano convex lens =f1

Refractive index of plano concave lens=μ2

Focal length of concave surface of plano concave lens=f2

The radius of curvature of their spherical faces=R

Relation between f1 and f2 is given by following relation

f1=2f2

Step 2. Find the relation between μ1 and μ2

Using lens maker formula

1f=(μ-1)[1R1-1R2]

For plano convex lens

1f1=(μ1-1)[1-(1-R)]1f1=(μ1-1)(1R)f1=R(μ1-1)

For plano concave lens

1f2=(μ2-1)[(1-R)-1]1f2=(μ2-1)(1-R)f2=-R(μ2-1)

As,

2f2=f12R(μ2-1)=R(μ1-1)2R(μ1-1)=R(μ2-1)2μ1-2=μ2-12μ1-μ2=1

Hence, option (C) is correct.
