A plant has leaves that are partly green and partly white. The plant is destarched and a leaf is partly covered by black paper.
The plant is placed in bright light for several hours. Four discs are then cut from the leaf in the positions shown and are tested for starch.
Which discs contain starch?
2 only
Disc 2 contains starch. A variegated leaf is a leaf which has both green and non-green parts. As the green parts contain chlorophyll they can photosynthesis and contain starch, but the non-green parts do not contain chlorophyll, so they cannot photosynthesis.
